The parkas and other gear are issued to us in Christchurch at the USAP Antarctic Center. We are required to wear them on the flight to Antarctica (which everyone down here simply calls "the ice"). I'm not sure what good they would do if we crashed into the Southern Ocean, but oh well. They are nice to have on once we land and are greeted with early spring Antarctic weather!
